The Bowring Chronicles-Episode Seven: Wednesday Happens

Welcome back to The Bowring Chronicles, where the trees are innocent, the squirrels are judgemental, Billy's gone the bar, and every Wednesday proves that the best stories begin with...

"...Watch this."

There are some things in life you can set your watch by.

The tide.

The changing of the seasons.

The bins going out on a Tuesday.

And Wednesday evenings at Bowring.

Honestly, if the Swiss ever get tired of making clocks, they should come and study us.

We're remarkably predictable...

...in the very best way.

🚨 BREAKING NEWS

Officials can confirm Wednesday has happened again.

Despite rumours that people might "just have a quiet night in"...

Attendance remained high.

Experts have concluded that fresh air, flying plastic and good company continue to beat watching reruns on the sofa.

The study will continue next week.

🚗 The Arrival

It starts the same every week.

Cars roll into the car park.

Boots open.

Bags come out.

Someone says,

"Alright?"

Someone else replies,

"You alright?"

No one has actually started playing yet.

Somehow, the evening already feels better.

🔑 Keeper of the Keys

As always...

David was already there.

Baskets out.

Course ready.

Having probably launched The Red Valkyrie once or twice while everyone else was still looking for a parking space.

There should probably be a blue plaque somewhere that reads:

"On this very spot, David casually threw a Red Valkyrie further than most of us drive to work."

😊 Bowring's Official Welcome Committee

Before the first tee...

Laura had already welcomed a newcomer.

Explained the basics.

Introduced half the group.

Reassured them that nobody cared about scores.

By the third hole they were laughing.

By the sixth they were asking...

"So... are you here every Wednesday?"

Hook.

Line.

Sinker.

📹 Kev's Camera Corner

Kev was spotted crouching behind a basket.

Nobody knew why.

Thirty seconds later we'd all seen the footage.

Turns out he'd just filmed what looked like the winning putt at Augusta.

It was Dave's tap-in from twelve feet.

The man can make anything look cinematic.

Rumours continue that Kev and Laura have secured enough prizes for the next Mersey Masters player packs to fill a small warehouse.

Negotiations are believed to involve smiles, charm and just a tiny bit of magic.

🧠 Professor Harley Explains...

Today's lesson...

Why throwing harder doesn't always make the disc go further.

Half the group nodded knowingly.

The other half immediately tried throwing harder.

Research continues.

📖 Dad's Corner

Ruaraidh delivered today's wisdom.

"Slow is smooth. Smooth is far."

Billy paused.

Thought carefully.

Looked Ruaraidh straight in the eye.

"Cheers, Dad."

Without looking up from his bag, Harley added...

"He told you that last week, Grandad."

Ruaraidh smiled the smile of a man who knows that one day they'll all realise he was right.

Probably.

🕵️ The Bowring Intelligence Agency

Jo T greeted someone she'd never met before.

Within minutes she'd worked out...

  • where they lived,

  • who they worked with,

  • that their mum knew someone from Aintree,

  • and that she'd "definitely seen them in Tesco."

Nobody questioned it.

Experience has taught us not to.

🥏 The Great Search

At approximately 7:18pm...

Someone lost a disc.

Immediately, the entire group transformed into the Bowring Search & Rescue Team.

People spread out with military precision.

Billy offered detailed guidance.

From a distance.

Eventually the disc was found.

Exactly where Laura had quietly suggested looking in the first place.

Nobody mentioned this.

Except Barry.

He definitely smirked.

🌳 Tree of the Week

This week's winner...

The one everyone avoided...

Until the last player.

Who hit it perfectly.

It was almost impressive.

The tree accepted its award with characteristic humility.

🏆 Excuse of the Week

This week's winner...

"I wasn't aiming for the basket on that throw."

A bold tactical approach.

We'll never know if it worked.

🍺 BREAKING NEWS

Eyewitnesses have confirmed...

Billy...

Went the bar.

The bartender reportedly looked at his watch and said,

"Right on time."

❤️ The Real Scorecard

Nobody remembers every score.

Nobody remembers every league point.

But ask anyone about Bowring...

They'll remember...

The first birdie.

The impossible tree kick.

The sunset.

The laugh that made everyone stop throwing.

The newcomer who arrived nervous and left smiling.

The mate who helped find their disc.

The friend who waited while they threw "just one more."

That's the scorecard we keep.

And somehow...

It's always under par.

📜 Bowring Wisdom #7

"The best throw of the night is the one everyone celebrates."

Even if it wasn't yours.

Especially if it wasn't yours.

Until Next Wednesday...

Barry will be watching.

The Red Valkyrie will fly.

Laura will welcome.

Kev will film.

Professor Harley will explain.

Dad will advise.

Billy will ignore the advice.

Jo T will know somebody's cousin.

David will quietly pack the baskets away.

And Wednesday...

Will happen all over again.

Exactly the way we like it.
