The Bowring Chronicles – Episode One: Sunshine, Tree Kicks & New Addictions
Welcome to The Bowring Chronicles – our completely unofficial, highly unreliable record of life on the fairways of Bowring Park.
Think of it as less BBC News and more that chat everyone has in the car park after the round.
No filters.
No serious statistics.
Just the moments that make our little community what it is.
The Weather Deserves a Standing Ovation
Let's start with the obvious.
Whoever's been in charge of the weather this season... take a bow.
Wednesday after Wednesday we've rocked up to sunshine, warm evenings and a course looking absolutely magnificent.
It's almost suspicious.
We're Liverpool.
We're genetically programmed to pack a waterproof, sunglasses and a winter coat for the same evening.
Yet somehow Bowring has delivered week after week.
We're not asking questions.
Welcome to the New Recruits
Every week someone new appears.
Usually looking around with that expression that says...
"I've no idea what I'm doing, but this lot seem friendly enough."
Correct.
Within minutes they've learned the first rule of disc golf:
The disc never goes exactly where you think it's going to.
Unless, of course, you're aiming at a tree.
Then it's frighteningly accurate.
Watching new players discover the game is one of the best parts of what we do.
There's always that one throw.
The one that flies perfectly.
Everyone cheers.
The player stands there looking slightly confused.
"Did I actually do that?"
Yes.
Enjoy it.
You'll spend the next six holes trying to recreate it.
Tree of the Week Award
Congratulations to...
That one tree.
You know the one.
The one that somehow gets in everyone's way despite being in exactly the same place it's been for decades.
We'd like to thank it for reminding us all that confidence and accuracy are two very different things.
Overheard at Bowring
Some things are guaranteed to be heard every Wednesday...
"Nice shot!"
...followed immediately by...
"Oh no..."
"I've definitely lost that."
"It's the wind."
"I didn't put enough on it."
"I put far too much on it."
"Anyone got a spotter?"
And the all-time classic...
"I meant to do that."
No judgement here.
We've all said it.
Some of us every week.
Scientific Discovery of the Month
After extensive research carried out by absolutely nobody qualified to conduct it, we've reached the following conclusion:
The further you walk away from your disc...
The better your previous throw becomes.
By the time you've reached it, you're convinced it was a tactical masterpiece.
Memory is a wonderful thing.
Why We Keep Coming Back
People often ask what makes disc golf so addictive.
Is it throwing amazing shots?
Sometimes.
Is it getting exercise without feeling like you're exercising?
Definitely.
Is it the beautiful surroundings?
Absolutely.
But mostly...
It's the people.
It's arriving after a long day at work and instantly forgetting about meetings, emails and traffic.
It's laughing when your mate hits the first available tree.
It's helping someone look for a disc even though you've no idea where it landed.
It's celebrating somebody else's birdie like you've just won the lottery yourself.
Somewhere along the way, Wednesday evenings stopped being "disc golf nights."
They became our nights.
Until Next Time...
So that's another chapter in The Bowring Chronicles.
Another week of questionable shot selection.
Another collection of stories we'll probably exaggerate slightly by next Wednesday.
Another reminder that sometimes the best evenings don't cost much, don't need planning months in advance and don't involve staring at a screen.
Sometimes all you need is a few discs, a beautiful park and a bunch of brilliant people who don't mind laughing at themselves.
We'll see you next Wednesday.
Bring a smile.
Bring a disc.
Bring a spare disc...
...just in case Bowring decides it wants to keep one.
