Learn to play disc golf with us
A beginner’s guide from your Liverpool Disc Golf Community
If you’ve ever thrown a frisbee in the park and thought “this is fun” — then you’re already halfway to playing disc golf.
Disc golf is one of the fastest-growing sports in the world, and here in Liverpool we’re lucky to bring our brilliant pop-up course to Bowring Park every week through the Spring and Summer. Even better, the Liverpool Disc Golf Community runs friendly weekly sessions where anyone can come along, learn, and enjoy the game together.
Whether you’re completely new, curious about the sport, or looking for a relaxed outdoor activity, this guide will give you everything you need to get started.
What Is Disc Golf?
Disc golf is played much like traditional golf — but instead of clubs and balls, you throw specially designed flying discs at a metal basket target.
The aim is simple:
Complete each hole in the fewest throws possible.
Players move from one tee pad to the basket, counting each throw until the disc lands in the basket chains.
What makes disc golf special is that it’s:
🌿 Outdoors and active
👨👩👧 Great for families
🤝 Welcoming and social
💸 Very low cost to start
🧠 A mix of skill, strategy and fun
Most importantly — it’s a sport where everyone can play.
The Basic Rules
Disc golf is easy to learn. Here are the essentials:
1. Start from the tee
Each hole begins from a marked tee area.
2. Take turns throwing
The player furthest from the basket throws next.
3. Count every throw
Each time the disc is thrown it counts as a stroke.
4. Finish in the basket
The hole is complete when the disc comes to rest in the basket.
5. Lowest score wins
Just like golf, the aim is to finish the course in the fewest throws.
That’s it. Simple to understand, endlessly satisfying to improve at.
The Main Types of Disc Golf Throws
As you develop your game, you’ll start learning different throwing styles.
Backhand Throw
Backhand tips for beginners
Pull the disc straight across your chest
Rotate your hips and shoulders for power
Release smoothly rather than throwing hard
The most common throw and usually the first one beginners learn.
Feels similar to throwing a frisbee
Great for control and distance
Used by most players for tee shots
Forehand (Sidearm)
Thrown from the side of the body with a flicking motion.
Useful for tight angles
Great for getting around trees
Adds variety to your game
Putting
Beginner putting tips
Keep the throw controlled and balanced
Aim for the centre of the chains
Develop a consistent routine
Used when you’re close to the basket.
Short, controlled throws
Focus on accuracy rather than power
The chains catch the disc and help it drop in
Beginner Tips to Improve Quickly
Everyone improves quickly with a few simple habits.
Start Smooth, Not Strong
Most beginners try to throw too hard. Focus on smooth technique and timing first.
Aim Before You Throw
Pick a specific point or gap rather than just throwing towards the basket.
Let the Disc Do the Work
Disc golf discs are designed to fly in specific ways — trust the disc instead of forcing it.
Practice Your Putting
Putting is where most strokes are saved. A few minutes of practice makes a big difference.
Play With Others
The fastest way to learn is by playing with experienced players who can offer tips and encouragement.
