A Swede in Merseyside

In December 2025, we had the absolute pleasure of meeting Ulf, a visitor to Liverpool who is handy with a disc. We were delighted to share a few rounds over at the always amazing Longford Park and we asked Ulf to tell us about his experience…

Yep, that's me. You're probably wondering how I ended up in Liverpool with this bunch of handsome lads. Who am I? The most handsome one if you ask me. No, not that boss looking lad down to the left. No, not the one who looks like a tougher version of Daniel Craig. Not the one with the eyes and smile that can melt any mother-in-law's heart either… I'm the bald one.

Anyway, my name is Ulf and I usually bring a disc or two with me when I'm out traveling and experiencing new places. I can really recommend it, at least to all of you, who like me enjoy spending a few hours now and then throwing a piece of plastic through varied terrain. It's a great way to see more of the place you're visiting and often a little bit off the beaten track and it's always fun to run into local players to chat with. Once when I was in Copenhagen I spent a whole afternoon with a stranger. He had noticed that I looked lost, no wonder considering the course layout was quite tricky. Getting to know someone over a round of disc golf is something very nice! So when I started planning my first trip to Liverpool last fall, I did some research to see if there were any local courses. To my disappointment, I couldn't find any, but after searching further, I found a Liverpool Disc Golf page on Instagram. I gathered up some courage and wrote a question asking if there were any Liverpudlians who would consider taking me on a round at one of the courses outside the city sometime between Christmas and New Year (I wrote "gathered up" because it doesn't come naturally to a Swede to be outgoing and so forward).

The answer I got was positive. Once in Liverpool, David picked me up in his car, and later we also picked up Billy and his son H. It was a really great day. We managed two rounds at Longford Park and lunch in between the rounds. One of the best things about disc golf is that it doesn't really matter if the players in a group have different skill levels, because during a round everyone will do something that the rest of the group will applaud you for, but it's also almost guaranteed that even if you're the best in the group you'll mess up at some point and then you'll hear about it. In other words, banter at its best and there was a lot of it that day.

As a Liverpool FC supporter since childhood, I have picked up some Scouse from all the TV interviews of Scouse players over the years and countless hours on YouTube and RedmenTV. But this day gave me an intensive course in Scouse at an advanced level. Something I have to thank Billy a little extra for. In summary, I was made up with the whole day, Longford Park was a nice course with a varied layout located in a picturesque location, the lunch place that was next to the park was also class. But best of all was David, Billy and H. And if there was one thing that was consistent throughout my entire stay in Liverpool, it was the people I came across and got the chance to get to know. They even recommended the best curry house in Liverpool - Taj on Lark Lane. Everyone was open, welcoming and outgoing and often with a great sense of humour, which really made me feel at home in a city I had only dreamed of visiting before.

And if any of you happen to be in my neck of the woods sometime, don't hesitate to get in touch. The Gothenburg region is home to many great disc golf courses, one of which is ranked as the second best in the world.

Until next time
